Nantes, France

Henrique Oliveira participates in Le Voyage à Nantes, an annual festival that transforms the French city's public spaces with art installations.
The artist presents a work conceived for Place Graslin, facing the Nantes Opera House, entitled Fitzcarraldo's Dream, 2024. The title refers to the 1982 film by German director Werner Herzog, in which a man fights against the forces of nature to build a theater in the middle of the Amazon rainforest.
The work consists of gigantic trunks and branches, made of plywood and wooden siding, which erupt from the ground and advance towards the theater's staircases and doors. With his work, Oliveira points to symbiotic, parasitic or confrontational relationships between humankind, architecture and nature, creating fantastic and haunting landscapes.
Le Voyage à Nantes runs until September 8.
