The Quase Auroras series, consisting of about 30 drawings (2005 to 2009), originates from a Tunga experiment with a certain object that was in his studio – a crystal bottle placed on his desk. The play for many days served for the artist to look, from where they left their daydreams.

The object reached the affection of a talisman. Tunga gradually introduced hair, chains, fragments of imam and even the yellow liquid of his own urine, radical, organic and experimental, recurrent in his life and work, always visceral. “I had the distinct impression that it had been done through me, not by me, something like psychographed, perhaps that was why it attracted me, produced side effects, referring to projections …”, says the artist.

The piece then started to follow the long silences of the artist who occupies daily his place of work. “Not infrequently I found myself staring into the void even though I was looking for the ‘talismanic trophy’. If I say so, it is because I have deposited an amount of inspiration. Not that I used it as a model for my drawings, but in contemplation of it I saw other images as underlying it, vapors or shadows of totally different natures”, writes Tunga in the exhibition catalog.

The visual perception of the glows and reflections projected by the object led the artist to call what he had unwittingly constructed of “projection phanocopy.” Impregnated by these luminous and dreamlike images, Tunga develops the series of drawings, which he reveals as “chromatic phanographies of deposition”.
