Millan is pleased to announce that Gustavo Caboco is one of the curators of the Brazilian Pavilion at the 60th Venice Biennale, alongside Arissana Pataxó and Denilson Baniwa. The curatorial project was selected by a committee representing the São Paulo Biennial Foundation and the Ministries of Culture and Foreign Affairs.
Entitled Ka’a Pûera: we are walking birds, the exhibition by Glicéria Tupinambá and guests will take place in 2024 at the Brazilian Pavilion. During the exhibition, the space will be renamed as the Hãhãwpuá Pavilion — a word used by the Pataxó to refer to the territory that, after colonization, became Brazil.
Ka’a Pûera allows for two simultaneous interpretations: it refers to the ancient forests cleared by the Tupinambá for agriculture, which later regenerated, revealing the potential for resurgence, and it also relates to the capoeira bird that lives and camouflages itself in dense forests.
In relation to the theme Foreigners Everywhere of the Biennale, curated by Adriano Pedrosa, Ka’a Pûera: we are walking birds addresses issues of marginalization, deterritorialization, violation of territorial rights, and the resistance to these injustices.
