MUDAM holds a retrospective show of Peter Halley’s work

The Contemporary Art Museum of Luxembourg (MUDAM) presents Peter Halley. Conduits: Paintings from the 1980s, a retrospective exhibition of the artist's work.

Curated by Michelle Cotton and assisted by Sarah Beaumont, the exhibition brings together works from public and private collections. It also displays for the first time drawings, sketches, and notes made during the first decade of Halley's career.

Through painting, the artist addresses the social structures and bureaucratic rationalism in the organization of life in large urban centers. Since the 1980s, he has developed his own vocabulary of "cells", "prisons" and "conduits" that update debates posed by geometric abstraction and minimalism, addressing the emergence of new media, communication platforms, and the feelings of alienation and isolation that emerged in New York at the time.

Halley's — whose only solo show in Brazil was held at Millan, in 2021 — vast theoretical output also appears in the exhibition, which features essays, interviews, and unpublished notes by the artist. For the occasion, MUDAM has also planned the launch of a publication and a conversation with the artist.
