Thiago Martins de Melo runs for Best Animation at Havana Festival
La Habana, Cuba
The short film Rasga Mortalha, 2019, with direction and screenplay by Thiago Martins de Melo participates in the 42nd Festival Internacional del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano and is competing in the Best Animation category.
As a metaphorical vector for thinking, and also transcending, a fatalistic view of Brazilian history, Martins de Melo uses the legend of the owl "Suindara" — much told in folklore of the North and Northeast of Brazil — to cross centuries of public events with memories, references and personal imaginations, creating a charged and sharp narrative. The stop motion film, distributed by A Gota Preta Filmes, has already won 25 national and international awards, in addition to 90 official selections in film festivals.
