Guga Szabzon

Guga Szabzon is an artist and educator. In her research she explores felt as a support for sewing, weaving images in a dialogical process of technique and gesture in which the spontaneity of the line answers to the speed of the machine. In her recent works – which are materialized in different dimensions – the lines trace the felt’s surfaces impetuously, creating vibrant compositions of colors and movements or resembling landscapes, maps, and cartographic studies. In abstract works, the lines, dots, and fragmented geometric shapes constitute a continuous movement of syncopated rhythm. In addition to her practice are sketches and annotations by the artist, who collects poetic writings, words, and other fragments of everyday life derived from careful observation of the world, as important in her process as the studio routine.

She graduated in Visual Arts from Fundação Armando Álvares Penteado – FAAP, in 2009, and from Faculdade Paulista de Artes – FPA, in 2010. In the same year she was selected for the artistic residency program Brasil goes Berlin, funded by the German government. In 2009, she was part of Projeto Tripé at Sesc Pompeia and, in 2012, Szabzon participated in the exhibition program at Centro Cultural São Paulo – CCSP. In 2014, she was part of the artist residency programme organized by the artist Elisa Bracher at Instituto Acaia in São Paulo and in 2016, she participated in the artist residency programme of A Ilha in Lisbon.

In 2025, Szabzon held the special project Calambur at Millan in São Paulo. Among her solo shows are Tremor, at Millan, No todo trayecto es recto, Travesía Cuatro, Guadalajara, Mexico, both in 2023; Dia e noite, ainda é longe?, at Galeria Superfície, São Paulo, in 2021; and Tudo que criamos passa a existir, Sesc Ipiranga, São Paulo, both in 2019.

Noteworthy group shows Szabzon was featured in include I opened the curtain to see what lays behind, na carlier | gebauer, Berlin, Germany, in 2024; A vastidão dos mapas, at the Palacete das Artes, in Salvador and Hóspede, at the Fundação Ema Klabin, São Paulo, in 2018; That same year she was one of the artists who performed activation of works of the 33rd Bienal de São Paulo. In 2019, her work became part of the permanent collection of the Museu de Arte do Rio – MAR.
